TUNGSTEN TENSILE SAMPLES

Case Study

THE PROBLEM

A leading energy customer needed to reduce the surface roughness of SLM-printed tungsten tensile samples from 13 µm Sa to ≤1 µm Sa, all within a <60-minute cycle. Manual polishing methods posed risks to part geometry, and conventional electrochemical processes struggled with refractory metals like tungsten.

THE SOLUTION

Holdson’s electroform™ technology was selected for its non-contact, acid-free approach that preserves geometry and mechanical properties.

Using the ef-300 machine and a custom electrolyte designed for ultra-hard materials, parts were polished in 45 minutes, achieving a surface finish of 0.9 µm Sa – fully meeting customer requirements and opening the door to further trials on more complex components.

3 Tungsten: Tensile Samples for Nuclear Sector first is pre polish sample, second polished for 20 mins and third 45mins
